Zapraszamy na otwarcie wystawy The City is Empty

5 - 19 października 2013
otwarcie 5 października (sobota) 2013, godz. 19:00
CSW Kronika, Rynek 26, Bytom

Krïstïan Skylstad, rezydent projektu A Place Where We Could Go, na podsumowanie swojego pobytu na Śląsku kuratoruję wystawę, do udziału w której zaprosił czołowych, norweskich artystów. Tytuł wystawy The city is Empty nawiązuje do norweskiego znaczenia nazwy miasta Bytom – BY (miasto) oraz TOM (puste).

Buty, lubię damskie buty i lustra.

Welcome to the opening of the exhibition The City Is Empty
5 – 19 October 2013
Opening: Saturday 5 October, 7 pm
CSW Kronika, Rynek 26, Bytom

As the corollary of his participation in the residency project A Place Where We Could Go, Krïstïan Skylstad is curating an exhibition to participate in which he has invited leading Norwegian artists to take part. The title of the exhibition The City Is Empty is a pun on the Norwegian meaning of the name of the city of Bytom: (by: town and tom: empty).

"He is moving alone in his house, and everything is about him. They are skiing, but far away. These pictures are not pictures of buildings, but drawings. This building will never be built, because he chose to be an artist instead of an architect. They are cheering every time they see a nigger. Let the ink drop, let it flow. Shoes, I like womens shoes, and mirrors. Let me sing, sing, about him. Desolate landscapes, and here I am, recording their surveillance. I just want the image to brrrreake up, to breeeakkke up, to dissolve. There is an alternative to everything, especially the hype. I think in lines, I do, and I care how they do - the lines. We work together in love. I just stumbbllld into this, by accident, because we know each other. You just piece fabric together on cheap material and accidentially it looks like 911. I'll send something if I have time. Someone is alone, in this city tonight I try to do what's right, in this city... But I only transform quotes. I'm fiction, and you don't even believe it. PERFORM."

15.00 - 18.00).

On Saturday 21 September, there took place the launch presentation of the acoustic sculpture Lament by Paweł Kulczyński. It was accompanied by a concert by the artist, this time billed as Wilhelm Bras. The installation, partially based on a choral Renaissance composition The Lamentations of Jeremiah by Thomas Tallis, is also an artist’s commentary on the changes wrought on the city centre by modernisation.
The presentation will run in the Old Wire Factory in Gliwice until 5 October (Tuesday – Saturday, 3 – 6 pm). You are cordially invited. You can listen to a fragment of the sound installation on the artist’s web page: >>>

Below, we present the photographic documentation by Maga Sokalska.

Zapraszamy na otwarcie projektu Pawła Kulczyńskiego LAMENT

Stara Fabryka Drutu
Gliwce, ul. Dubois 22
Otwarcie 21 września (sobota) godz. 18.00
godz. 19.00 koncert Wilhelm Bras

W gliwickiej Fabryce Drutu powstała instalacja dźwiękowa, będąca jednocześnie artystycznym komentarzem do zachodzących w centrum miasta przemian modernizacyjnych. W ramach międzynarodowego projektu artystycznego A Place Where We Could Go realizowanego przez Fundację Imago Mundi i bytomskie CSW Kronika, artysta dźwiękowy Paweł Kulczyński przygotował pracę – rzeźbę akustyczną, bazującą częściowo na chóralnym utworze z okresu renesansu, Lamentacje Jeremiasza, angielskiego kompozytora Thomasa Tallisa.

In the Gliwice Wire Factory an acoustic installation was being created that is at the same time an artistic commentary on the modernisation taking place in the city centre. As part of the international art project A Place Where We Could Go produced by the Imago Mundi Foundation and the CSW Kronika, the sound artist Paweł Kulczyński has been working on a sculpture, based partially on the choral Renaissance composition Lamentations of Jeremiah by the English composer Thomas Tallis. The installation, which consists of five 3 m high, smooth, white pipes/columns, has been set in the production hall of a factory the windows of which look out on to a nearby park and municipal palm house and a dual-carriageway under construction in the centre of the city – the Gliwice section of the Central Highway linking the cities of Upper Silesia.

Thus, the noises of construction that can be heard from the vicinity of the building automatically become part of the composition. The project also uses field recordings made on the construction site. The sounds follow the tune and harmonies of Tallis’s composition. Choral recordings and synthetic elements, together combining into an aurally rich whole.

For Paweł Kulczyński this is a very personal work related to his home city, in which, due to ill-thought out decisions made by the local council, in the very heart of the city, along municipal parks, the river and the university campus there is being built a high-speed road that separates and breaks up public space. Hence, the installation’s ambiguous title: Lamentations.

As the artist has himself commented on his project: ‘I’m hoping I’m wrong and things will take a different course, although, on past experience, I don’t have high hopes. All that’s left is to sit down and weep; and that is what I’m doing, by means of my work. This is a helpless cry of protest against processes over which I have no influence but which touch directly on my life.’

The opening of the project will be accompanied by the concert by the artist, who will appear as Wilhelm Bras.

The project is partnered by the Former Wire Factory in Gliwice and Association of Animators of Comprehensive Youth Development in Gliwice.
